Broccoli City Festival is an American music festival founded by Brandon McEachern in 2013. American rapper Nipsey Hussle performed in its sixth annual year on April 28, 2018.
Background[]
The 2018 lineup was announced in January. Brandon McEachern said via an email to Billboard concerning Nipsey, "I'm a fan of his thought process. We [had him on] a panel years ago, and I like his spirit and what he represents for our community. He's self made, and we love that!" Upon hearing Victory Lap, McEachern resonated with it and stated, "It's about controlling your own narrative. As African Americans, we have to do a better job of telling our own stories. Nipsey does this very well, and he also shares knowledge which, in the black community, we don't do well. We like to keep secrets and withhold connections sometimes. That's wack to me."[1]
Near the end of his performance, Hussle declared, "I've been seeing a lot of goofy shit going on. I've been seeing n*ggas wearing Make America Great Again hats. I ain't really feeling that shit, I'm gonna be honest with y'all." Then he launched into the single "FDT" ("Fuck Donald Trump"), accompanied with an image of Kanye West donning a MAGA hat on the screen behind him.[2] Billboard documented of this moment, "[Many] will remember the Los Angeles rapper using the now-infamous photo of Kanye West donning a Make America Great Again hat as a background image during his performance of he and YG's "FDT (F— Donald Trump)." It's become the event's enduring viral moment, but wasn't the most important message Hussle communicated. [...] Hussle points to psychologist Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs when extolling the importance of black entrepreneurship. Our physiological needs are at the base of the pyramid, and we must address each succeeding level's needs as we move upward in pursuit of self-actualization. The black community's barrier to this promised land is financial power."[1]
In 2019, American singer Teyana Taylor sang "Gonna Love Me" as a tribute to Lauren London and Hussle, with a video of the two playing as the backdrop. The Washington Post reported, "Out of respect for being someone who led by example, Nipsey Hussle was honored with an official tribute on the main stage. On top of that, Hussle received another display of respect from one of the festival's most-anticipated performers: Lil Wayne."[3]
